Then, with no particular fanfare, Ndoto led Namunyak up onto the branch, firstly to the section further along which had lots of distractions.  They then walked, as if playing with us, straight over this section onto another branch.  Finally, Ndoto turned and settled and our patience was rewarded.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eWhat followed was ten minutes of entirely one-sided entertainment. Namunyak became completely absorbed in his own tail — chasing it round and round the branch with the focus of any young animal discovering that coordination takes practice. He had identified the next branch, made the calculation, and was a fraction of a second from leaving the one he was on. The right rear foot is still in contact with the wood. The front right foot is raised and poised. The eye, and this is what makes the image, is locked completely on the target branch with a focus so absolute. The body is coiled energy held momentarily still. Everything is about what happens next.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAgainst a clean sky background, with nothing behind him to fragment the composition or compete with the subject, the image becomes a study in suspended motion. The branch he is leaving runs diagonally through the lower frame, giving it direction and tension. Namunyak occupies the upper portion; compact, precise, mid-decision, with the open sky behind him providing a clarity that this particular moment needed and rarely gets.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBlack and white was the only choice. The detail that matters here is not the rosette pattern of the coat or the colour of the eye; it is the mechanics of the body and the intensity of the gaze. Monochrome strips the image back to exactly those two things and nothing else. The drama, such as it was, had already concluded. What remained was this: a mother and cub, low in the savannah grass, composing themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eKulete is looking left; alert, scanning, running the same quiet continuous assessment that the earlier portrait caught her performing alone. The chase has not unsettled her exactly, but she has not yet decided that the situation is entirely resolved. Her attention is outward, methodical, covering the ground to her left with the focused patience of an animal that has learned not to assume safety until it has been confirmed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eSadala, tucked into her mother’s shadow and looking in precisely the opposite direction, is doing the same thing. Two sets of eyes, one hundred and eighty degrees of coverage between them. What reads at first glance as a tender domestic scene; cub sheltering against mother, mother watching over cub; is on closer inspection a coordinated surveillance operation conducted by two cheetahs of very different ages and experience. Kulete provides the shadow. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe grass is what gives this image its texture and intimacy. Both animals are low, partially obscured, integrated into the savannah in a way that the cleaner, more formally composed images in this collection deliberately avoid. Here the landscape is not a backdrop; it is the context, and the context matters. They are not posing. They are hiding, resting, watching, recovering. The rain was light; barely rain at all, more of a considered drizzle, and the backlight from a break in the cloud was catching the individual droplets and the fine fur along Sadala’s outline in a way that lasted only a few minutes before the cloud closed again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe combination of elements in this frame is one that is very difficult to manufacture and almost impossible to anticipate; a named individual animal, a specific age and stage of life that passes quickly and cannot be revisited, backlight of unusual quality, and the texture of light rain in the air between the lens and the subject. Just Ndoto, alone, stretched along the branch with the complete physical ease that leopards achieve and nothing else comes close to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe background is clean and open — sky and soft light, nothing competing with the subject. That kind of backdrop in the Mara is not guaranteed. The acacia sits at an elevation that, at certain times of day and from a specific vehicle position, allows you to isolate the branch against clear sky entirely. It requires patience with the angle and a degree of luck with the light. On this morning both were available.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThere is nothing happening in this photograph. That is exactly the point. The Mara moves fast — kills, chases, charges, confrontations. This is the other side of it. The branch runs diagonally through the frame from upper right to lower left, and he follows that line with his body angled slightly downward, the evening light falling through the canopy above and landing on him in the broken, shifting patterns that only dappled light through acacia leaves produces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThat light is the making of this image. Dappled light on a moving subject in the field is genuinely difficult to work with; it shifts constantly, it flattens in the wrong places and overexposes in others, and most frames in a sequence like this will have the light landing badly on the face or blocking the eye entirely. This one had it right. The patches of warm evening light catch the rosettes on his flank, illuminate the side of his face without losing the eye, and leave enough shadow across the rest of the coat to give the image depth and dimension.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eColour was unambiguous here. The warmth of the evening light, that particular late-day gold that the Mara produces in the hour before dark, is inseparable from what the image is. It is also the quality that distinguishes this frame most sharply from the black and white image made just minutes later. Relaxed and still, standing broadside in a way that felt almost considered, she offered a full lateral view of everything that makes a cheetah a cheetah; the deep chest tapering to an impossibly narrow waist, the long spine with its distinctive dorsal flexibility, the legs built for acceleration rather than endurance, the tail that functions as a rudder at speed and hangs with elegant weight at rest.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe clean background was the making of the image. No bush fragmenting the profile, no competing tones pulling the eye from the subject. Just Kulete, fully legible from nose to tail, against open light. What is entirely different here is the atmosphere. No cub. No tail-chasing. No maternal supervision required. Just Ndoto, alone, stretched along the branch with the complete physical ease that leopards achieve and nothing else comes close to.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThe background is clean and open; sky and soft light, nothing competing with the subject. That kind of backdrop in the Mara is not guaranteed. The acacia sits at an elevation that, at certain times of day and from a specific vehicle position, allows you to isolate the branch against clear sky entirely. It requires patience with the angle and a degree of luck with the light. On this morning both were available.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eThere is nothing happening in this photograph. That is exactly the point. The Mara moves fast; kills, chases, charges, confrontations. This is the other side of it. An apex predator on a warm morning with nothing to prove and nowhere to be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eThis image is about both form and stillness. Whether that's really what he was feeling is impossible to know, but it's how the photograph speaks to me every time I look at it.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUnlike the endless energy you'd expect from a young cheetah, there was no movement here. Just a quiet pause. His eyes are gentle yet incredibly direct, and for a fleeting moment he seemed completely absorbed in whatever was holding his attention.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe grasslands of the Maasai Mara remind us that this isn't a staged portrait but a wild animal in its natural home. Young cheetahs often find themselves briefly alone while their mother hunts or moves through the grass, and this image captures one of those moments. Surrounded by the vast African landscape, Sadala appears small and vulnerable, yet quietly confident at the same time.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"isSelectedEnd\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI chose to present this photograph in black and white because colour distracted from what drew me to the image in the first place; his expression. Removing the warm tones of the savannah allows the viewer to focus entirely on the textures, the light and, above all, the connection in his eyes.
