This image is of one of the temples within the Acropolis site in Athens.  Rising 150 meters (490 feet) above the Ilisos valley, the Acropolis—meaning "highest point of the city"—has been the sacred heart of Athens for over 3,000 years. While it served as a fortress in Mycenaean times, its golden age arrived in the 5th century BC under the statesman Pericles, who transformed the rocky plateau into a monumental sanctuary for the gods.
