Colosseum II

Colosseum II, Rome, Italy

This one of a series of three striking black and white photographs captures the Rome Colosseum not just as a monument, but as a testament to human ambition, engineering genius, and the passage of time.

By stripping away the distractions of colour, this print emphasises the powerful interplay of light and shadow across the weathered travertine stone, highlighting the monumental scale of the ancient world's greatest amphitheater. It’s a piece that feels simultaneously historic and deeply modern.

The Story Behind the Stone

Commissioned around 70–72 AD by Emperor Vespasian and completed in 80 AD under his son Titus, the Flavian Amphitheater—famously known as the Colosseum—stands as the ultimate symbol of the Roman Empire's peak power.

• Engineering Marvel: Built using an ingenious system of concrete, Roman brick, and over 100,000 tons of travertine stone, it could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators.

• The Spectacle: For four centuries, this arena was the epicentre of Roman public life, hosting legendary gladiator battles, mock sea battles, theatrical dramas, and public spectacles.

• A Living Relic: Having survived devastating earthquakes, fires, and centuries of stone-scavenging, the ruined outer walls tell a story of resilience. This photograph captures those exact textures—the scars of history etched permanently into the architecture.

Why This Print Works in Your Space

• The Monochrome Advantage: Removing colour strips away the modern tourists and bustling Roman traffic, leaving you with a pure, dramatic view of antiquity that fits seamlessly into any decor.

• Museum-Quality Detail: Every arch, column, and fracture is rendered in crisp, high-contrast detail, drawing the eye in to explore the intricate Roman craftsmanship.
