Reflections on Corsham
Reflections on Corsham, Corsham, Wiltshire
Shot from the pavement on Corsham High Street, this photograph uses the reflective surface of Coppins jewellers' window to mirror the frontage of the Flemish Weaver pub - the 17th-century alehouse - and the Town Hall, a short distance along the High Street.
The High Street has a well-established connection to film and television. In 2014, Corsham's High Street was transformed into 18th-century Truro for BBC One's Poldark, starring Aidan Turner. During filming, the Flemish Weaver pub was used as the base for the leading actors and was temporarily rebranded as the Red Lion. A decade later, during Series 2 of Rivals - a Disney+ adaption of Jilly Cooper's novel starring David Tennant, Coppins was dressed as the fictional Cotchester Jewellers, and the Town Hall served as a polling station set.
The Flemish Weaver itself takes its name from the Protestant weavers who fled religious persecution in the Low Countries and settled in Corsham, where they enhanced the town's woollen industry.
