This is the same evening as the black and white profile portraits of Rudi— same animal, same fading light, same unhurried temperament. But where that image was about structure and authority, this one is about colour. And at dusk in the Mara North Conservancy, with the right animal in front of you, colour can make a compelling case for itself.

Rudi’s mane at this hour sits somewhere between amber and deep copper, catching the last warmth of the day in a way that no other time of day produces. The eye — which in the monochrome portrait reads as intent and watchful — here reveals its full amber depth, the iris catching the light with an intensity that is difficult to look away from. The tonal range of a lion’s face at dusk, from the pale cream of the muzzle to the near-black of the deepest mane, is one of the most complete natural palettes Africa offers. This image makes no attempt to simplify it.

The framing is tight — head only, filling the frame, the background falling away to soft, indistinct warmth. There is no horizon, no habitat, no contextual information beyond the animal itself. It is a portrait in the fullest sense, made with the same intent you would bring to photographing a person whose face was worth the attention.

Rudi tolerated the vehicle at close range that evening in the way that only a truly established male does — not indifference exactly, but a settled confidence that left no room for anxiety. That quality comes through in the frame. He is not performing. He is simply, completely, himself.
