Giraffe I
Giraffe I, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya
Most wildlife photography meets animals at eye level — or rather, at vehicle level, which for a giraffe means somewhere around the chest. This image was made from the ground, and that single decision changes everything.
The camera position is low — savannah occupying the bottom quarter of the frame, the full height of the giraffe rising from it, and above that a generous blue sky carrying the kind of cloud that the Mara produces on its better afternoons. From this angle the giraffe is not tall in the way that giraffes are usually described as tall — impressive but contextualised, measured against trees and horizon. Here the animal is genuinely monumental. It rises from the grass and keeps going, filling the vertical frame with a presence that the standard vehicle-height perspective simply cannot produce.
The giraffe is positioned to the right of the frame, head turned toward the photographer with the alert, slightly quizzical expression that giraffes deploy when something on the ground has caught their attention. There is no alarm in it — just curiosity, and perhaps a mild assessment of whether the thing lying in the grass constitutes any kind of concern. The conclusion, evidently, was that it did not.

A note on sizing
