Elephants are among the most socially complex animals on earth. They greet one another with ceremony, comfort one another in distress, and maintain relationships across decades and distances that would be unremarkable in a human family and are extraordinary in most other species.  The trunk is central to all of it - the primary instrument of communication, reassurance and connection.

This image was made in the Mara North Conservancy during an encounter between two adult elephants.  There had been multiple interactions between the two, from calmer moments, to this almost romantic engagement as they wrap their trunks around each other with deep affection.  The clean background - open sky, no competing vegetation - meant the two elephants are isolated against the light.  This is one of a series of four images from this incredible encounter.
