Kulete II

Kulete II, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya

The full profile image of Kulete established the architecture. The close colour portrait revealed the face. This third image occupies the space between the two — body visible but not fully extended, head up and turned, attention directed at something beyond the frame that has nothing to do with the photographer.

Kulete is positioned at forty-five degrees — not broadside, not head-on, but at the angle that reveals both the depth of the chest and the length of the flank simultaneously. It is, whether by chance or the natural geometry of the moment, the most complete single view of a cheetah’s body that a still image can offer. The full profile shows you the silhouette. The portrait shows you the face. This angle shows you the animal as a three-dimensional presence — the way the shoulder sits above the foreleg, the taper from chest to waist, the weight carried in the haunches, the neck rising cleanly to a head that is turned and focused on something else entirely.

That last detail matters. Kulete is not performing for the camera — she is not even acknowledging it. Her attention is fixed at distance, on whatever has caught it, with the alert stillness of a cheetah running a quiet, continuous assessment of her surroundings. The photographer, at this moment, is neither threat nor interest. The result is a portrait made in full view of a subject that has effectively granted you invisibility.

Black and white draws the eye immediately to the geometry of the pose — the diagonal of the body, the counter-diagonal of the turned neck, the horizontal of the gaze extending beyond the frame. In colour these would still be present but softened by the warmth of the coat and the tones of the landscape behind her. Monochrome makes the structure of the composition as legible as the structure of the animal, and the two turn out to be remarkably similar — precise, spare, and resolved.

A note on sizing

All sizes refer to the image area only — the border, mount, and frame add to the overall dimensions. If you’re buying for a specific wall space or an existing frame, please factor this in. Not sure? Drop me a message and I’ll help you work it out.

Something else in mind?

Different size, different frame, different format entirely — I’m happy to help. Get in touch via the Contact page and I’ll do my best to sort it.
