Ndoto and Namunyak I

Ndoto and Namunyak I, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya

Ndoto is a female leopard with a well-established territory and, at the time this was taken, had a young cub named Namunyak.

We had positioned at this particular tree before 6am, having heard that Ndoto had used it as a resting spot on a previous evening. The tree had a single section of a single branch that had an unobstructed view that would make a great image. The guides knew her patterns well enough to back the hunch, but leopards keep their own schedule. Nearly two hours passed. Other vehicles came and went. Then, with no particular fanfare, Ndoto led Namunyak up onto the branch, firstly to the section further along which had lots of distractions.  They then walked, as if playing with us, straight over this section onto another branch.  Finally, Ndoto turned and settled and our patience was rewarded.  

What followed was ten minutes of entirely one-sided entertainment. Namunyak became completely absorbed in his own tail — chasing it round and round the branch with the focus of any young animal discovering that coordination takes practice. Ndoto watched with the patient, slightly resigned expression of a mother who has seen this before and knows there is nothing to be done about it.
