Rudi
Rudi, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya
Rudi is one of the better-known male lions in the Mara North Conservancy — a large, well-maned animal with the kind of presence that fills a frame without any help from the photographer.
This was taken at dusk, at the end of a long dry-season afternoon. Rudi had come down to drink, as lions often do in the last of the light when the heat has finally relented. The moment he lifted his head and looked back over his shoulder was brief — a few seconds at most — but it is the kind of gesture that stops you. Watchful, unhurried, completely assured.
The decision to present this image in black and white was straightforward. Dusk in the Mara can produce beautiful warm colour, but here the colour was a distraction. What mattered was the texture of his mane and the weight of his gaze. Black and white holds all of that without compromise.

A note on sizing
All sizes refer to the image area only — the border, mount, and frame add to the overall dimensions. If you’re buying for a specific wall space or an existing frame, please factor this in. Not sure? Drop me a message and I’ll help you work it out.
Something else in mind?
