Elephants in the blue, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya

Blue hour in the Mara North Conservancy lasts approximately twenty minutes. It arrives after the sun has dropped below the horizon but before the sky has committed to darkness — a window of light that is not quite day and not quite night, during which the sky moves through a range of blues that have no real equivalent at any other time. On the right evening, with the right subject on the horizon, it produces images that are impossible to make at any other hour.

This was the right evening.

A small family group — four elephants - is moving along the horizon line as the blue deepens behind them. As a group they form a horizon of their own — an irregular, living skyline set against the luminous blue above and the darker ground below, the last of the residual light just sufficient to separate them cleanly from both.

Colour here is not a choice — it is the entire point. The specific quality of blue hour blue, moving from deeper cobalt at the top of the frame toward a pale, almost luminescent horizon, is what the image is built on and around.
