Heavy is the Crown
Heavy is the Crown, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya
There is a reason the lion has appeared on coinage, crests, and royal seals for three thousand years. In pure profile, its head is one of the most compositionally complete forms - the mane framing the face, the jaw line clean and heavy, the eye carrying a quality that is difficult to name but impossible to misread.
This image was made in the Mara North Conservancy on a morning after the family had concluded a hunt. This lion sat, having already eaten, watching over his pride finishing the remains of the buffalo.
This is an intimate portrait of the lion, drawing out the details and texture of his mane. He sits calmly with an authority; the muscular structure of his upper leg reminding the viewer of the incredible strength of this majestic animal. If ever there was a portrait of the lion king, this is it.
