Morning Light
Morning Light, Mara North Conservancy, Kenya
Giraffe are often people's favourite wild animal and its not hard to see why. The Masai giraffe is the tallest animal on earth, and yet up close, what strikes you first is not the scale but the detail. The deep, unhurried eye fringed with lashes that seem almost implausible. The patterning of the coat - each patch separated by pale lines, no two animals identical - rendered in tones of burnt sienna, chestnut, and cream.
This portrait was made in the early morning in the Mara North Conservancy, in the dramatic light of golden hour; between sunrise and the first hour of full day. The framing was a conscious choice. Head and neck only, tight enough to remove the surrounding landscape entirely. The slight angle of the head, the focus of the eye, the almost imperceptible tension in the neck - these are the details that reward time spent looking.
